Estate Rental Data
The multi-page spreadsheets contain data derived from the various estate rentals. They are not direct transcripts. Some of the rentals were written in a prose style, whilst others were tabulated similarly to how they are presented here. It must be noted that the data was compiled for purposes of analysing pre-modern agricultural economics and other detail contained in the rentals will have been ignored as irrelevant to that purpose. They are all, however, wonderful documents and well worth the effort of viewing ‘in the flesh’ at the appropriate institutions.
The Garioch and Buchan rentals displayed here are housed in either the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh (NRS) or else in the University of Aberdeen Special Collections. Some documents share the same reference. This is because they are bound together in the archives under that reference. The short 1552 Forbes Kynedward rental and the Buchan rentals pertaining to the former teindal superiority of Deer Abbey have been taken from the ‘Illustrations of the Topography and Antiquities of the shires of Aberdeen and Banff, 4 volumes (Aberdeen, Spalding Club)’ as it seems appropriate to present them in the same place for comparative purposes.
